Petite Étude de la Mécanique Obsolète
PETITE ÉTUDE DE LA MÉCANIQUE OBSOLÈTE - Arthur Coquille-Hopfner - MAY 2023 at 229 LAB
For a week, 229 LAB has invited Arthur Coquille-Hopfner (@la__canaille__ ) and his mesmerizing automats, unveiling his captivating world where obsolescence, noise and time meet at the same place.
229 LAB is pleased to invite him for his exhibition that will follow his in-house residency.
"My work exploration at 229 LAB is a mise en abyme, an experience of obsolescence in a place stripped of its former functions, keeping only the memory, the beginning of a sensitive posterity."
Beauty resonates in his self-made machines. Composed of past objects that come in movement through a programmed mechanism, it could seem absurd, but it is not.
Arthur Coquille-Hopfner (1998) is a 24-year old artist based in Paris. His work, essentially sculptural, explores the body, the mechanical body, the cold body. Accompanied by noise, obsolescence, fragility, his automatons are the result of the hazardous recycling of household appliances, scrap metal and materials of all kinds. His mechanisms go off the rails, they wear out, break. In the middle of them he repairs these. He values their fragility, their sensitivity.
